The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and Irving police made a sweep of the inside of bars and arrested some 30 people on charges of public intoxication.
The arrests were “concerned saving lives, not individual rights” according to the TABC. Some arrests were even made in hotel bars, and involved people registered at the hotel - with no intention of driving anywhere. Tough poop, according to the cops. Those people could have driven somewhere. They could have done something harmful to themselves or others.
Innocent until proven guilty means exactly jack-squat to those opposed to people doing things others don’t like. And the guys with the power - the cops - are running right along with with ‘em. All too happy to arrest those who could have committed a crime.
Life follows art, eh?

Doubtful. Do as we say, not as we do.

Texas Arresting People in Bars for Being Drunk…
Damn. I can just imagine what morons we Texans must look like to the Brit who reads this Reuters piece in a London pub while working his way through a pint.

I think the TABC is abusing their power. If they want to arrest people who are about to drive drunk, that is okay.
But they need to arrest them when they are going to their vehicles, that would make more sense.
Now the bars and restaurants are going to suffer because people will be afraid to drink as much or maybe even any.
When the alcohol companies start losing sales, then we will see some changes being made.

I run a bar in the Texas Hill Country and one of my bartenders got arrested for serving in intoxicated person. He faces up to a $500.00 fine and a year in jail. All employees that work for me keep a close eye on people getting too intoxicated and we cut them off. We are not trying to purposely get people as drunk as they can get we just want everyone to have a good time. I can understand my bartender getting arrested if he forced a patron to chug a couple of beers to the point of intoxication and made him drive home. But this didnt happen. He just served a beer to a customer who happen to have a B.A.C. of over .08. The customer was not about to drive off. In fact we alway call a taxi who anyone who we think is not safe to drive. The customer showed no obvisious sign of intoxication. My T.A.B.C. Agent said that the customer stepped on another customer’s foot. In my bar, it gets really pack and I have actually stepped on other people feet trying to get through the crowd. I dont think that this should have been a reason for my bartender to spend a nite in jail and face up to a year in jail. I agree with tryng to bring down the number of Texas DWI’s, but I think this is ridiculous.
