Ahh. there we go. Much better. Welcome to Swanky Conservative! Welcome back, I should say. Call it a reboot or maybe I just borrowed that red Easy Button from the State Department with “peregruzka” written on it, pushed it, and vĂ³ila, it’s a reborn site.

Yes, the site has that “C” word in it. Trust me, though, someone of Pat Buchanan’s ilk would be very uncomfortable here. I’m conservative in the sense that I went through my card-carrying Greenpeace, Earth Day, gun control phase sometime when I was between the ages of 18 and 24. Building a house and choking on the subsequent property tax increases brought about an awakening. Calling it a tent revival style “seeing of the light” would be over the top. But not by much.

A rundown of my belief system:

All people have inherent rights not granted by a State, therefore not revocable by a State. If you want to say God or some Higher Being bestowed them on Man, great. Knock yourself out. I believe we have them because we exist. Six of one, half-dozen of the other.

A government should do the minimal possible required to operate. The 10th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States has been abused over the past 80-some-odd years. Our nation should have the delegation of duties, privileges and responsibilities illustrated in the shape of a pyramid. The wide base being the People, the middle section symbolizing the States and the narrow top being the Federal government. Currently, the top is ever-widening as the citizens continue to slough responsibility and powers to a centralized government.

Social matters are matters for individuals and families first and foremost. What you do in your home is your business. What I do in mine is my business. I will do my best to treat you as an adult (provided you’re over 18, of course) and I expect the same courtesy from you.

In a similar vein, Church matters are Church matters, not political matters. Don’t tell me what I can or can’t buy on Sunday, stay out of my bedroom, stay out of my love life.

Continuing on this theme (The traditional “Right” side of the political spectrum has been involved with the Church in a far-too-intimate manner for my taste) the State has no business telling me which other legal adult I can or can’t marry. The heterosexual segment of society is experiencing a divorce rate that gives it no authority to tell homosexuals they are a threat to the Traditional Family. For that matter, the Catholic Church’s over-familiarity with little boys gives that religious body Zero room to talk about threats to the Family.

I have a common theme underlying all these societal / political beliefs: Individual first. Take care of things at the lowest possible level in the structure. That means yourself, then your family, then friends / neighbors, then municipality, then state, and last, the federal level. The bureaucracy and cost go way way up while the effectiveness of a solution and the efficiency of delivery inversely drop the higher up that ladder you go.

Enough for now. The other word in the title of this site is Swanky. Hemingway’s words, “Live life to the fullest,” are what’s in mind when I mention being Swanky. Smile, have fun, be daring, do not be embarrassed of success or good times. Enjoy good food & drink, great music and an occasional cigar.

Cheers!
