Austin Consul General of Mexico speaking today on border violence

January 25th, 2006 · No Comments

In about an hour the Consul General de Mexico en Austin, Licenciado Jorge Guajardo, will give a talk on border violence. He’s speaking on campus and I’ll be there, especially given the recent incidences near El Paso.

I’ll try to get some photos and I’ll take notes on my laptop, in order to save time transcribing my chicken-scratch handwriting. If there are questions taken, I would like to ask a couple. One, what is it about Mexico that makes the United States so attractive, that people come here illegally in such numbers? Two, what can the Mexican government do to hinder incursions and incidences of violence on the border?

1:55 The talk is about to start and my initial dismay at the turnout is gone. The room filled up in the last five minutes. It’s almost standing room only. Good. I was thinking I would have to pen a screed on today’s slacker college student. Instead I am impressed that we have this many attendees. Yes, many are here for class credit, but that’s still a good thing.

More: The speech is over and I’m going to continue this in another post. The Consul decided to bait and switch us, speaking instead on a broader topic.
