New Haven neighborhood organizing armed patrols

June 12th, 2007 · No Comments

Members of the Edgewood neighborhood in New Haven, Connecticut are organizing armed patrols to try and deter a rise in assaults. Community leaders are frustrated with the police’s inability to protect them so they are taking the issue on themselves. Two-man teams with uniform, marked t-shirts and legal concealed firearms will patrol the neighborhood streets.

Bravo! Why ask for help when you can work within the law to take care of a problem yourself? It’s this kind of do-it-yourself thinking that makes for a better society. Just knowing there are armed community members out there is something of a deterrence to would-be criminals. It’s also a cost-saver for the city as these patrols are members of the neighborhood doing it gratis, vs. having to pay for extra patrols and additional officers.

Legal, inexpensive, efficient, responsive. Where is the negative in this?
