2004 Tsunami map
Move your mouse over the outlined squares to read information about that area. The counts and other info will be updated as I come across new numbers.
11:14 a.m., EST. Jan. 19 The best way to guarantee more of something is to say you're probably done with it. According to the Guardian, Indonesian health ministry officials raised the official number of dead to 166320. This brings the total dead from the tsunami and earthquake to around 225000.
2:52 p.m., EST. Jan. 18 Updated the numbers, probably for the last time. The figures are leveling out, so I'll probably not update them again. We're looking at some 167-thousand confirmed casualties and over 186000 estimated dead. I encourage visiting Wikipedia's site if you want to track them any more. Right now, the largest issue is probably the distribution of aid resources, something that has to be done on the ground in the affected countries. If there are any items of interest that you want on this page, please let me know via the email address at the bottom of the page.
7:24 a.m., CST. Jan. 11 Updated the numbers again, using the figures from Wikipedia's site.
12:30 p.m., CST. Jan. 6 Added a mouseover for Diego Garcia. Updated the numbers. Removed the 400000 figure of estimated dead in Indonesia. Not sure how that number will swing. Hopefully it will be smaller as more investigation is done. So far, my domain's stats for the month of January have already exceeded all previous month's. There have been over 19000 visits and we're just 6 days into the month. I appreciate the visits and am hoping you find this map useful. I also hope you've visited some of the relief effort links on the left of the page and have donated something to the relief efforts. As always, if you have information that might be useful for the map or know of an error I may have made, please email me at the address below. Thanks to all who've visited.
7:36 p.m., CST. Jan. 5 Updated the numbers.
12:15 a.m., CST. Jan 2 Noted some footnotes from the Wikipedia page where I get the casualty numbers. The official count of the dead in Indonesia has been stopped, for now, due to "chaos in the affected areas." The numbers for Thailand include at least 2461 foreigners. I have been wondering about Diego Garcia and how it fared. Global Security has an article about the island and how it suffered no damage. Global Security also has the best page for before and after satellite imagery related to the tsunami-affected regions.
2:04 p.m., CST. Jan. 2 Double-checked my numbers after a couple of people emailed me. I did have a typo for the Sri Lanka confirmed casualty numbers; I've corrected that. The estimated dead in Indonesia is still current. The numbers come from the Wikipedia page linked below. The 400000 number comes from the Malaysian National News Agency.
10:15 a.m., CST. Jan. 2 The casualty numbers are over 140000. Amazon's donation page to the American Red Cross is at $11.9 million.
6:00 p.m., CST. Dec. 30 Updated the country's numbers in the mouseovers. Casualty count sits at 122,403. I removed the phone numbers from the mouseovers. The links on the left of the page lead to lists of phone numbers that are probably more accurate than what I found a few days ago.
12:00 p.m., CST. Dec. 30 Added a sidebar with links. The casualty count is over 122000. I should be able to update the mouseover boxes later today.
3:30 p.m., CST. Dec. 29 Updated numbers. The total now stands at 83351 confirmed dead. South Africa's number of confirmed dead has been revised back to four.
9:45 a.m., CST. Dec 29 Entered updated numbers. The total now stands at 73283 confirmed dead. South Africa's number of confirmed dead has been revised to one. I'm also linking to a very extensive list of aid agencies at The Command Post.
12:00 a.m., CST. Dec. 29 Corrected some typos and adjusted the casualty summary using Wikipedia's page.
8:22 p.m., CST. Dec. 28 Updated numbers from Wikipedia. In addition to the countries on the map, South Africa reports four deaths. The total deaths exceeds 63 thousand.
4:45 p.m., CST. Dec. 28 CNN is reporting the death toll is officially at 33,586. I'm not revising my numbers down, because I believe they will "officially" climb as high as 50000 +. If, however, multiple sources revise the numbers down, I'll do the same. I'm also adding countries to the map from CNN's page, though, if I don't already have them. Added: Kenya, Tanzania. Also added contact numbers for Maldives, India, Sri Lanka, Seychelles, and Thailand. I should note that Burma is also known as Myanmar.
2:00 p.m., CST. Dec. 28 As of 2 p.m., CST, the death toll is over 50000. Move your mouse over the outlined squares to read information about that area. The counts and other info will be updated as I come across new numbers.
