1 The epicenter of the earthquake which registered a 9.0 on the Richter scale. There was an estimated 30 meter shift in the tectonic plates in the region.

2 Indonesia: 166,320 confirmed dead. More than 120,000 estimated dead. Approximately 100000 injured. 131479 missing. About 517000 displaced.

3 Thailand: 5305 confirmed dead. 11000 estimated dead. 8457 injured. 4499 missing.

4 Nicobar Islands: It is believed that they were shifted by the quake.

5 Malaysia: 68 to 74 confirmed dead. 299 injured.

6 India: 10744 confirmed dead. 16413 estimated dead. 5669 missing. 380000 displaced.

7 Sri Lanka: 38195 confirmed dead. 15686 injured. 23000-plus missing. Approximately 573000 displaced.

8 Burma (Myanmar): 59 confirmed dead. 290 to 600 estimated dead. 45 injured. 200 missing. 3200 displaced.

9 Maldives: 82 confirmed dead. 26 missing. 12000 to 22000 displaced.

10 Bangladesh: 2 casualties.

11 Madagascar: 1000-plus displaced.

12 1-3 confirmed dead.

13 More than 150 confirmed dead. 298 estimated dead. 5000 displaced.

14 Tanzania: 10 casualties. More than 10 estimated killed.

15 Kenya: 1 casualty.

16 The atoll of Diego Garcia, a British territory and a US Navy installation was not affected by the tsunami. The Chagos Trench sits just east of Diego Garcia and the depth of the water kept the tsunami down to just a swell.

17 Krakatoa: This island volcano erupted in 1883. As a result, at least 36417 dead, global climate was altered for some time, the eruption was heard almost 5000 miles away.
