Hurricane Dean at Category 5, Mexico in the path

Texas can most likely breath easy. Hurricane Dean, which is now officially a category 5 storm, should hit the Yucatan peninsula tomorrow, followed by a stint in the Bay of Campeche before hitting the Mexican mainland Wednesday.

Hurricane Dean, Category 4

Hurricane Dean is a Category 4 storm with winds maxing out around 150 miles per hour. The storm is just south of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The pressure has dropped 10 millibars, indicating an increase in strength soon to come.

Texas Governor Perry declares Dean an imminent threat

Not content to wait around (*cough*Blanco,*cough*Nagin*)Governor Rick Perry declared Hurricane Dean an imminent threat to Texas and is activating emergency resources:

250 Texas Military Forces (TMF) command personnel to support the
potential activation and deployment of up to 10,000 TMF soldiers,
if necessary

Erin’s fizzled out, everyone watching Dean

My sister-in-law is in school on the island of St. Kitts so we’re watching Hurricane Dean somewhat closely. So far the only real effects are that tests are being delayed a few weeks and it’s windy. The latest tracking map from the National Hurricane Center shows the eye of Dean passing south of St. Kitts.

Tropical Storm Erin moving towards Texas

Tropical Depression 5 is now Tropical Storm Erin. In my opinion, Erin’s little more than a blustery storm. She won’t get much bigger, her winds aren’t expected to be much higher than 50 miles per hour when she touches land, and the rainfall amounts aren’t expected to get above 3 to 4 inches.
